“Justin Smiley was born of friends Andrew Thompson and Paul Dawson – the two of them coming together in the early 1990’s to take their first tentative steps towards chart stardom. What began as a much needed and shared creative process for them both, evolved to become a tongue-in-cheek and self-deprecating pop creation that had big aspirations, whilst at the same time acknowledged its musical limitations. Justin Smiley sung the songs of two young men finding their way in a changing world. A bedroom based DIY band? A studio band? A stonking live act? Justin Smiley just couldn’t decide. As a result, Justin Smiley wasn’t destined to last. He was a victim of his own success. He was perfect while he existed, but just as quickly as he was created, he went and died. He leaves just his back-catalogue to remind us of just how brilliant he could have be become. It’s just a shame that more people didn’t get to know him while he was alive.”
